Government hosts roundtable meeting for lobbyists

Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, today hosted a successful roundtable meeting with registered lobbyists to seek their feedback on the Government’s lobbying framework.

The meeting was organised as part of the Government’s commitment to keep the operation of the Lobbying Code of Conduct and the Lobbyists Register under constant review.

“The Rudd Government believes lobbying is a legitimate part of the democratic process. However we need to ensure that lobbying activities are carried out in an ethical and transparent manner,” Senator Ludwig said.

“Consistent with the Government’s commitment to ongoing review of the lobbying framework, we are consulting with lobbyists on further improvements to increase the professionalism of the industry.”

Some of the issues raised include:

“Shortly after coming to office the Rudd Government established the Lobbying Code of Conduct and Lobbyists Register to ensure Ministers had complete knowledge of who they were meeting and whose interests were being represented.”

“After more than 18 months in operation, it’s important we review the lobbying framework to ensure it continues to maintain the integrity of Government decisions.”

The Government will consider the issues raised in today’s meeting and if there is a need for improvement.
