Government welcomes JSCEM report into events in the Division of Lindsay

The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters has today tabled the Report on the 2007 Federal Election – Events in the Division of Lindsay.

Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig, welcomed the report and thanked the Committee members for their contributions.

“I would like to particularly thank the Chair, Daryl Melham MP, for a comprehensive report made necessary by one of the least savoury episodes in Australian political history,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Committee makes three recommendations in its inquiry arising from the unauthorised pamphlet scandal which tarnished the 2007 election.”

“The Government will now give the Committee’s recommendations due consideration as we continue in our efforts to restore integrity to Australia’s electoral laws.”

“The Government currently has a Bill before the Senate that will reinstate the close of rolls period for a federal election and repeal identification requirements for provisional voters.”

“This Bill is part of a range of efforts being pursued by the Rudd Government to implement a fair and modern electoral system.”
