Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, today welcomed a report by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Public Administration into the effectiveness of the Government’s Freedom of Information Bills.
“I would like to thank the Committee for their important work in this area,” Senator Ludwig said.
“The Rudd Government is embarking on the most significant overhaul of Australia’s Freedom of Information laws for over 25 years.”
“The Committee has endorsed the objectives of the Government’s FOI agenda, to implement a pro-disclosure culture across government and build a stronger foundation for more openness in government.”
“The Government will now examine the most appropriate way to implement the recommendations.”
The Freedom of Information Amendment (Reform) Bill 2009 and Information Commissioner Bill 2009 are currently before the House of Representatives and the Government hopes to have the Bills before the Senate next sitting.
“Recently the Government appointed Professor John McMillan AO as the Information Commissioner designate,” Senator Ludwig said.
“Professor McMillan will be responsible for ensuring the new Office of the Information Commissioner is up and running as soon as practical after the Bills pass the Parliament.”
“I would encourage the Opposition to support us in our endeavours to provide Australians with better access and use of Commonwealth information.”
“The Government’s FOI agenda is an important part of our integrity agenda, to promote better transparency and accountability in government.”
