Senate passes Bill to establish National Security Monitor

Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig, today welcomed the passage of the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor Bill 2009 through the Senate.

The Bill establishes an independent reviewer of Australia’s counter-terrorism and national security legislation.

“It is the Government’s objective to strengthen the ability of our law enforcement and security agencies to fight extremism, while protecting the rights of all Australians,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Bill will establish an independent monitor to provide comprehensive and ongoing oversight into our counter-terrorism and national security legislation.”

“The objective of the Bill is to ensure our current laws operate in an effective and accountable manner and are consistent with our international obligations.”

“The Monitor will review the legislation annually, and report his or her findings to the Prime Minister and the Parliament.”

“The Monitor must also consider if our counter-terrorism and national security legislation remains necessary and contains appropriate safeguards for protecting individuals’ rights.”

“This new position will be vital to providing public confidence in our national security laws.”

“I would like to thank the members of the Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee for their extensive inquiry into the Bill.”
