Get online to discuss electoral reform

Cyber-savvy Australians are invited to interact with other users and discuss the Rudd Government’s second Green Paper for electoral reform at on online forum this week.

Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig, said an online discussion forum will be open from Monday 9 November to Friday 13 November.

“Australian’s electoral laws have not been comprehensively reviewed since 1984,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Rudd Government believes now is the appropriate time to look at our electoral system and decide if it still provides the best possible framework for democracy in Australia.”

“The online discussion forum will promote rich discussion and debate within the community, and allow a means of direct feedback to Government.”

The aim of the second Electoral Reform Green Paper – Strengthening Australia’s Democracy, is to examine Australia’s electoral processes and architecture generally.

“Questions raised in the second Green Paper relate to the processes that apply to enrolment, how votes are counted, how seats in parliament are allocated and how we can remove unnecessary barriers for people to vote,” Senator Ludwig said.

“I am interested in consulting with all Australians with the aim of enacting a fairer and more transparent electoral system.”

“In addition to the online discussion forum I am also inviting written submissions by 27 November 2009.”

Details about the online discussion forum and written submissions can be found online at www.pmc.gov.au.

The forum will be open from 9am Monday 9 November 2009.
