Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig, today called on the community to get their submissions in for the second Electoral Reform Green Paper before the 27 November deadline.
“The Rudd Government is embarking on the biggest overhaul of the electoral system in 25 years,” Senator Ludwig said.
“The success of this process will largely depend on the level of participation from the wider community.”
“With just four more weeks of public consultation on the second Green Paper, I encourage people from all over the country to have their say on the future of Australia’s electoral environment.”
The second Electoral Reform Green Paper – Strengthening Australia’s Democracy raises a broad range of issues for discussion about our electoral processes.
Issues raised for public comment include:
“Recent developments in technology and communication have left many of our electoral laws out-of-date,” Senator Ludwig said.
“The intent of this Green Paper is to stimulate debate and discussion to assess whether our current electoral laws are relevant to a modern Australia.”
“The Government will take public submissions into consideration, when developing legislation that will meet the needs of the public well into the 21st century.”
The Green Paper is available at www.pmc.gov.au and submissions can be made by email, post or fax by 27 November 2009.
In addition to inviting written submissions, an online discussion forum will be open from Monday 9 November to Friday 13 November.
Details on written submissions and the online forum can be found online at www.pmc.gov.au
