Australian National Flag Day

Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, today commemorated 108 years since the Australian national flag was flown for the first time.

“On 3 September 1901, the then Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, announced the results of a competition to select a national flag for Australia,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Australian flag is now recognised around the world as an emblem of our nation and our people.”

“As Australians, we take immense pride in our rich heritage, democratic traditions and respect for diversity.”

“The national flag is Australia’s primary national symbol and over the years has become an expression of Australian identity and pride.”

“The image of the Southern Cross serves as a reminder for Australians across the globe of where they come from.”

The Minister today encouraged cities and towns across Australia to mark National Flag Day with a flag raising ceremony.

“Councils, schools, business and social clubs should get behind this important event and proudly raise the flag throughout their community.”

“On the sporting field, national days of celebration and mourning and in peace and war, the national flag is a symbol that Australians identify with.”

“It is the banner under which we celebrate in times of triumph and unite in times of sorrow.”

Merchant Navy Day is also commemorated on 3 September.

While the Australian Red Ensign is the official flag flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships, on this day, all organisations and individuals commemorating Merchant Navy Day are free to raise the Australian Red Ensign.
