Less than three weeks to nominate for Australian of the Year 2010

Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, has called on all Australians to submit their nominations for the Australian of the Year Awards 2010 before the deadline of Monday 31 August 2009.

"There are less than three weeks to go until nominations close, so get your nomination in quickly," Minister Ludwig said.

"This is your chance to have a say on who you think should be considered for the awards and to recognise those Australians who inspire you and make you proud."

"The awards are among the greatest honours this country can bestow on its citizens and in January we will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the awards."

"Your nomination could help find the next name in a long list of worthy award recipients."

National Australia Day Council Chairman, Adam Gilchrist, supported the Minister’s call for nominations.

"We are looking for those extraordinary Australians who are making a real difference to those around them," Mr Gilchrist said.

"Fantastic nominees come from all walks of life, and can be making a contribution in many different ways, be it in science, business, community support, education, humanitarian efforts, the arts or the any other field of endeavour."

"The thing that links these people together is the fact that they inspire us with the work that they do to make Australia a better place."

Nominating is simple – you can complete a nomination form online at www.australianoftheyear.org.au or pick up a nomination form from any branch of Major Sponsor the Commonwealth Bank, or call 1300 655 193 for more information. 

There are four award categories in which you can nominate a great Australian:

• Australian of the Year - open to all Australians who deserve recognition for their extraordinary achievements, contributions to the community and nation and who are inspirational role models to all Australians;
• Senior Australian of the Year - recognises those Australians aged 60 years and over who continue to achieve and contribute to the community;
• Young Australian of the Year - recognises those extraordinary young Australians aged 16 - 30 years who are contributing to our community;
• Australia’s Local Hero - recognises Australians who make a real difference in their local communities and whose outstanding contributions enrich the lives of those around them.
