I welcome the Report of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters (JSCEM) into the conduct of the 2007 federal election and related issues.
The Rudd Labor Government remains strongly committed to electoral reform, as an important part of implementing our election promise to restore integrity and trust in government.
I congratulate the Committee for their hard work and thank the Committee chair, Daryl Melham, for a thorough Report.
The Government will examine the Report, consider the Committee’s recommendations and respond in due course.
The Government is also in the process of considering responses to the first Electoral Reform Green Paper on donations, funding and expenditure, as well as drafting the second Electoral Reform Green Paper which looks at broader issues such as enrolment and voting.
Our goal is to enact a fairer and more transparent electoral system.
It is disappointing the Opposition will not join us in helping more Australians to exercise their right to vote. Once again, it appears that Opposition members of JSCEM are more interested in keeping people off the electoral roll than allowing all Australians to enrol and vote simply and fairly.
