The Prime Minister announced yesterday that Mr Ian Campbell, who is currently the Australian Electoral Commissioner, will be appointed Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
I want to thank Ian Campbell for his service and for the great contribution he has made as Australian Electoral Commissioner.
Mr Campbell served as the Electoral Commissioner from July 2005 and oversaw the conduct of the 2007 general election, including successful enrolment activities prior to the poll.
Deputy Commissioner, Mr Paul Dacey, will act in the position of Electoral Commissioner until a permanent appointment is made. The appointment of a new Australian Electoral Commissioner will proceed in accordance with the new merit based appointments system introduced by the Rudd Labor Government earlier this year.
